What is the hardest part of being a school counselor? ›

While bullying is one of the most common problems counselors face, suicidal threats can be the scariest. One of the most common mistakes counselors make when confronting children who are rumored to have made suicidal threats is accepting their first answer and the truth.

National School Counseling Week 2024, “School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused,” celebrated Feb. 5-9, 2024, focuses public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.

NOTE: The state of NJ requires a full master's in counseling to become eligible for a School Counselor Certification. For students not having the clinical pre requisites required by Montclair State University's CACREP-equivalent program, additional hours might be necessary.

ASCA National Model

The model demonstrates how school counselors can design programs with four components: Foundation, Management System, Delivery System, and Accountability. These components are influenced by four themes: Systemic Change, Advocacy, Leadership, and Collaboration.

Counseling awareness refers to the understanding and recognition of the importance and benefits of counseling services. It involves being aware of the various forms of counseling available, the potential benefits of seeking counseling, and how to access these services.

Certification Requirements. Applicants must: Have a bachelor's degree in a counseling-related field. Pass the Washington State Certified Adviser Examination in risk assessment, ethics and appropriate screening using the global assessment of functioning scale, client referral and Washington State law.
